in the Aerospace and great and that is my passion but on the flip side of that I'm really about stem education for student so I taught science engineering rocketry and Robotics for 13 years in Goose Creek and Dickinson so I I do have the background of being an education and I do find that this is very important for students to to take the the projects that we give them and have fun with them so School sometimes seems a little overwhelming so I really feel like if we were to give them projects where they can play and not realize that they're really learning in the in the interim that helps them out so I'm going to go ahead and share my screen me just a moment here okay so I'm only going to take 30 minutes of your time today we're going to do a parent activity and I'm kind of sad cuz I can't see you guys so mr. duenas is going to have to tell me how tall you guys were able to build their structures then I'm going to do a short presentation on why we want to promote stem and then I'm not sure if Miss Barkley Racino delivered your take home experiments yet I'll go briefly over those as well so I first thing about stem is we are at Spaceport and Spaceport is behind Ellington Field in Clear Lake so I am part of San Jacinto College but we're actually in part of the the Houston Spaceport so we have some huge companies that are coming in Via besides NASA that are are launching off this just a lot of space things I was telling mr. duenas before we met right now the UAE is actually Landing a probe on Mars as we speak it supposed to be landing in entering the atmosphere right now so I'm not pretty exciting and then in February 18th next week persevering are NASA rover and it's on drunk helicopter is going to be landing on Mars as well so we have a lot of things going on in space your children really have the best of all the world's going to school in this area I went to school in Nebraska I do not have any of these opportunities your children have the opportunity to go into oil and gas or technology sectors are medical sectors so many facets and your children I have a wealth of knowledge right here at their back door so it's very important for parents to understand the even if you don't think that you have the means you don't have the the skills to promote your child that's not the case your teachers are there to say for you and if you want your child to be the next astronaut or you want your child to be the next CEO of an oil and gas company the teachers and education that your children are are having is going to be most beneficial for this so I'm going to go ahead and go into our activity oops wrong computer and our activity today is a spaghetti Tower so I will have to request it mr. duenas tell me what's going on here so you are going to take your spaghetti strings you should have had mentioned that you needed 25 pieces of spaghetti string 225 individual uncooked pieces and then you're going to take some masking tape since I'm not there I can't just stretch out three feet for you but you can use the tape as needed and you're going to build the tallest tower and I'm giving you eight minutes to do it I did mine this morning in 8 minutes and I said it's about 3 ft tall so I want to see if you guys can beat my my tower at this point so I'm going to go ahead and set my timer for 8 minutes and I went price to build the tallest tower that you can using just your masking tape and your spaghetti strings nothing else you can't tape it to the table either and you need to have it standing and in 8 minutes go ahead and start building you start students do these types of things is because we can talk to them multiple things we can have them measure it so that's working with their math skills in their measurement skill we can talk to them about perimeter we can talk about an area we can talk about so many things in the master of the engine part of it is the engineering design process we we have a plan we're going to build this and what are we going to do with it it's problem solving in the technology part of its students if they had a computer they would be able to use tinkercad and they can build it in a 3D model and of course this virtual learning and I'll have the virtual learning with the Hands-On so I think the covid-19 technology platform so well so that was one good thing that came out of covid-19 I'm looking for the most
